Moving Tips

Preparation For Moving
Your first contact with McNaughton Moving will likely be with a Certified Moving Consultant. Advising the customer on every aspect of a well-planned move is the primary responsibility of this professional. The moving consultant will come to your home to explain to you and your family the many services that our company offers. Next, the moving consultant will perform a survey of everything in your home that will be moved. This survey allows the counsultant to provide you with an estimate of costs and various pricing options.

Packing Tips and Tricks
If you are planning on packing yourself, there are a few things involved that you will want to be aware of, such as:
  • Use the correct packing supplies. Don't use boxes that cannot be sealed and closed. Don't pack into plastic trash bags. Do not use masking tape.
  • When packing sharp items, it is highly advisable to mark the paper they are wrapped in with a marker denoting it as a "sharp" item.
  • Designate one drawer of a dresser for sheets and towels so that you won't have to rummage through boxes for these essentials the first night in your new home.
  • After you've thoroughly cleaned and dried the inside of your refrigerator, put a handful of fresh coffee, baking soda or charcoal in a sock or nylon stocking and place it inside to absorb moisture and keep the interior smelling fresh.
  • Pack your current phonebook. You may need to make calls to residents or businesses back in your former hometown.
  • Pack heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in large boxes.
  • Place pictures in boxes between sheets and blankets to give them added protection. DO NOT PACK PICTURES FLAT FOR ANY REASON.
  • Plates and records should be packed on edge vertically rather then placed flat and stacked. Books can be packed flat or vertically. For books packed vertically, place the spine of the book against the bottom of the carton. Drinking glasses, and especially stemware, should be packed vertically as they would sit on the table. They are designed to support more weight in this manner. Packing stemware horizontally WILL result in damage.
  • Toilet paper, telephone, toothpaste and brushes, snacks, coffee and coffee pot, soap, flashlight, screwdrivers, pliers, can opener, paper plates, cups and utensils, a couple of pans, and paper towels are some of the essentials you may need upon arrival at your new home. Pack a box with these types of items and ask your Van Foreman to load it on the van last so that it will be unloaded at your new home first.
  • When packing lamps, remove the light bulbs and shade harps before doing so.
  • In addition to the name and contents of each box, have children write their name and new address on the cartons from their rooms so they can become familiar with their new address before they get to their new home.
  • Upon arrival at your new home, allow your computer and other electronics to acclimate to room temperature before plugging them in. Damage may occur if electronics are at an improper temperature before starting.
  • Some items not to ship: valuable and expensive jewelry, coin and stamp collections, important documents, medications, irreplaceable photos, small handguns along with ammunition of any type.
  • Do Not Pack or Ship: any flammables including but not limited to: aerosol cans, gas grill tanks, ammunition, paints, paint cleaners, ammonia, hair spray, nail polish.
